The President this afternoon spoke with the Vice President and Robert C. McFarlane, Assistant to
the President for National Security Affairs, to receive an update on the situation in Lebanon and
receive their recommendations on Secretary Weinberger's withdrawal plan and the composition of
the United States delegation to the funeral services for Yuriy Andropov. They spoke at 1:30 p.m.
PST (4:30 p.m. EST) for 15 minutes.
The President this afternoon received the plan for the redeployment for the United States
multinational force in Lebanon from Secretary Weinberger. The report remains under review. The
President has directed that consultations take place with the Government of Lebanon and other
members of the multinational force. A decision will not be made until those consultations are
complete, and we do not expect a final decision until the first of next week.
