The President today announced his intention to appoint Charlton Heston to be a member of the
Board of Trustees of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Smithsonian
Institution, for the remainder of the term expiring September 1, 1988. He will succeed Efrem
Zimbalist, Jr.
Mr. Heston is an actor with over 50 starring roles in films to his credit in addition to many roles in
the theater and television. He made his Broadway debut in 1948 in ``Antony and Cleopatra.'' He
received an Academy Award for his performance in ``Ben-Hur'' in 1959 and made his debut as a
motion picture director in 1971 with the film version of ``Antony and Cleopatra.''
He served six terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild and was Chairman of the American
Film Institute. He received the 1978 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He recently served as Cochairman for the arts on the
Presidential Task Force on the Arts and Humanities.
Mr. Heston attended Northwestern University and served in the United States Air Force. He is
married and has two children. A native of Evanston, IL, he now resides with his family in Beverly
Hills, CA.
