The President today announced his intention to appoint James S. Stockdale to be a member of the
National Voluntary Service Advisory Council. He will succeed Roy Pfautch.
Since 1983 Mr. Stockdale has been deputy secretary of the California Health & Welfare Agency
in Sacramento, CA. Previously he was Deputy Under Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs at
the Department of Health and Human Services. He was executive director of the California
Reagan-Bush campaign in 1980; political director of Citizens for the Republic in 1978 - 1979; and
manager, State and local government affairs, Phillip Morris, Inc., in New York City (1977).
He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College (B.A.) in St. Peter, MN, and the University of
South Dakota School of Law (J.D., 1972). He is married, has three children, and resides in
Carmichael, CA. He was born December 16, 1937, in Pierre, SD.
