The President today announced his intention to designate William S. Cohen, United States
Senator from the State of Maine, to be an alternate member on the part of the United States on
the Roosevelt Campobello International Park Commission. He will succeed James H. Rowe,
Jr.
Senator Cohen was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1972, where he served
until his election to the United States Senate in 1978. He is currently a member of the Senate
Armed Services Committee and is chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Force
Projection. He is a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee and chairman of the
Subcommittee on the Oversight of Government Management. Additionally, he is a member of the
Select Committee on Intelligence.
He graduated from Bowdoin College (B.A., 1962) and Boston University Law School (LL.B.,
1965). He is married, has two children, and resides in McLean, VA. He was born August 28,
1940, in Bangor, ME.
