Nomination of Jeanne J.
Smoot To Be a Member of the National Council on the
Humanities

The
President today announced his intention to nominate Jeanne J. Smoot to be a
member of the National Council on the Humanities, National Foundation on the
Arts and the Humanities, for a term expiring January
26, 1994.
She would succeed Ellis Sandoz.
Since
1983 Mrs. Smoot has been Director of the Office of Academic Programs at the
United States Information Agency in Washington, DC. She is currently on
educational leave from North Carolina State University, where she has been a
professor since 1984; associate professor, 1974 - 1984; and assistant professor
of English, 1968 - 1974.
Mrs.
Smoot graduated from Eckerd College (B.A., 1964) and the University of North Carolina (Ph.D., 1968). She was
born June 10, 1943, in Spartanburg, SC. Mrs. Smoot is
married, has four children, and resides in Washington, DC.
