Press Secretary Popadiuk on the Conversation With
Prime Minister Mulroney of Canada Concerning the Canada-United States Free
Trade Agreement

The
President called Prime Minister Brian Mulroney at 9:18 a.m.
P.s.t. to congratulate him on the historic achievement
of the U.S.-Canada free trade agreement. The President noted that the
agreement, which goes into effect January 1, will benefit both Canadians and
Americans. ``Together,'' the President said, ``our governments have set an
example for the world on how eliminating trade barriers can benefit all
peoples.''
The President took the
opportunity to wish the Prime Minister and Mrs. Mulroney a Happy New Year.
