Commander Philip Dur
joined the National Security Council as senior staff member of Defense Policy
in September 1982 replacing Christopher Shoemaker. In 1983 NSC Defense Policy
was reorganized into the NSC Political-Military Affairs Directorate and Dur became a Deputy Director. By the time Captain Dur left the NSC in November 1984 he was Director of the
NSC Political-Military Affairs.
Dur
received a bachelor’s degree in government and international studies and a
master’s degree in Soviet East European studies from the University of Notre Dame. He earned a master’s degree in public
administration and a doctorate in political economy and government from
Philip Dur was
commissioned from the NROTC program at the University of
Notre Dame in August 1965. During his naval career, he achieved the rank of
Rear Admiral and held such posts as Assistant Deputy Chief of Naval Operations;
Director, Navy Strategy Division; Commander of Battle Force United States Sixth
Fleet; Commander of Cruiser Destroyer Group Eight; United States Defense
Attaché accredited to the Government of France; and Commanding Officer, USS Yorktown.
In 2004, Philip Dur
was Corporate Vice President, Program Operations and President of Northrop
Grumman’s Ship Systems Sector having joined the company in 1999 following five
years with Tenneco Inc. where he served as Vice President, Worldwide Business
Development and Strategy.
The Philip Dur
collection consists of memos, correspondence, cables, reports, meeting agendas,
meeting minutes, National Security Study Directives, National Security Decision
Directives, notes, charts, working papers, press releases, issue papers, and
publications re Dur’s and other NSC staffer’s work on
military and foreign affairs in the Middle East. Majority of the collection is Dur’s work product with the exception of the Lebanon Crisis
Pre-Planning Group File which was inherited from Oliver North and John
Poindexter. The material is arranged in
five series: Subject File, 1982-84; Chronological File, 1982-1984; Country
File, 1984; Lebanon Crisis Pre-Planning Group File, 1982-1983; and Middle East
Trip File, April 1984.
