Scope & Content Note

A running controversy over infant formula promotion and sales in the Third World, especially by Swiss company Nestlι, resulted in a move by the World Health Assembly to consider adopting an international code regulating the marketing of breast milk substitutes.  The vote on the new code was held in May 1981 and the United States was the only nation to vote against the code.
