Includes correspondence involving President’s Carter and Reagan, their advisers, Mudd’s descendants, and the general public, mostly from the from the WHORM subject file category JL001 (Amnesty-Clemency-Pardons).  In 1865, Dr. Mudd set the broken leg of John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln’s assassin who was a fugitive at the time.  Because of this, Mudd was convicted of being a participant in the conspiracy to assassinate Lincoln.  He was pardoned by the President in 1868, but his descendants wanted him declared totally innocent of wrongdoing.
