WH004-01 Mail Reports – White House (5.2 l.ft.;
boxes 1-13)
This secondary subject category
contains material relating to condensed and edited versions of selected
Congressional correspondence to the President; condensed and edited versions of
selected gubernatorial and local official’s correspondence to the President;
selected general correspondence provided to the President; reports on actual
numbers of mail sent out to agencies for replies and/or received from agencies;
reports on actual numbers of mail received for or against a specific topic; and
general questions on how the correspondence for the President is handled at the
White House. Over 90% of the material
within this subject category consists of the Congressional mail reports sent on
a regular basis to the President. Staff
members from the White House Office of Legislative Affairs culled
correspondence from Congress down to specific questions or support/non-support
remarks and identified the correspondence.
The President frequently commented or questioned the correspondence in
writing on the report. Documents containing the President’s handwriting were
removed and placed in the Presidential Handwriting File. Duplicates were left in WH004-01. Therefore,
the material within WH004-01 is mostly duplicates of material found in the
Presidential Handwriting File: Series V: White House Mail Reports.

A secondary subject
category containing material relating to the donation of the Presidential
Yacht, USS Sequoia from the Presidential Yacht Trust to the US Navy Historical
Foundation. In 1985 the Senate passed a
resolution supporting the donation. One
issue was the use of the Presidential Seal by the Presidential Yacht Trust on
their correspondence. An additional and
important issue was the expense of maintaining the Yacht and how this would be
funded.
